VOICING

Voicing is the process of adjusting the sound’s volume and colour. It is very important in order to achieve a pleasant performance.
After many months and years of playing, the hammers of the piano, which are made of hard felt, start to compress at the point of contact with the strings. The sound becomes harsh and metallic. Unevenness can appear between the notes and between the different registers.
A voicing can even out these problems and bring back the original voice of the instrument.

A talented customer once told me his intention to sell his grand piano. He liked clear and strong sounds, but in this case it was too much. The sound was aggressive, too percussive and lacking ‘colours’. The piano was from a good brand and bought new only two years before.
Even though he was skeptical, I convinced him to do a voicing, preceded by a top up regulation. After all, he could avoid spending a lot of money by buying a new piano again.

He was very surprised and delighted to find his instrument as it was when first bought.
It is a huge relief for him now to know that a piano can be ‘serviced’ in order to bring back the instrument’s potential. This experience was very satisfying.
